Toronto Police Issue Warnings Amid Anticipated 200,000-Strong Iran Protest
Toronto police are bracing for significant disruptions as an estimated 200,000 individuals are expected to gather in North York to demonstrate in support of Iran's ongoing protests. This anticipated turnout, which could surpass the 150,000 who participated in a recent downtown protest, has led to warnings of extreme traffic and transit delays.
The rally, organized as part of a Global Day of Action by exiled crown prince Reza Pahlavi, is poised to be one of the largest demonstrations in the city in recent memory. Police have announced road closures along Yonge Street from Steeles to Sheppard Avenue, with full closures between Steeles and North York Boulevard from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Residents and commuters are advised to avoid the area, as attendance is expected to exceed 200,000.
Constable Viktor Sarudi assured the public that the police are well-prepared, coordinating closely with organizers and monitoring the march in real-time. He noted that Yonge and Steeles will be completely shut down at 12:15 p.m., when the march is anticipated to commence, and that road closures will extend from Sheppard to Steeles.
Parking restrictions will be in effect on Yonge Street from Steeles to Sheppard between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m., and several adjacent roads will be restricted to local traffic only during the march. The TTC will adjust services, potentially including staggered station closures, and North York Centre Station will have limited access due to heavy foot traffic. The 97 Yonge bus will also be on detour after 11 a.m.
Despite the anticipated large turnout, Constable Sarudi expressed confidence that the event will remain peaceful, drawing on the historical peacefulness of similar protests. However, the exact end time of the rally remains uncertain, with police estimating it could conclude around 5 p.m. or 6 p.m. They also emphasize the need for time to disperse the large crowd safely.
The police will maintain a strong presence in the area throughout the day, ensuring public safety and managing the potential crowds. This large-scale demonstration highlights the ongoing support for Iran's protesters and the call for regime change.
