Aaron Hynes, a Bailieboro native, is dedicating his January to swimming 1000 meters daily. But this isn't just a New Year's resolution; it's a deeply personal mission, a tradition he's upheld for the past eight years. And this is the part most people miss: it all started when his son, Harry, was born ten weeks prematurely.
Since Harry's arrival, Aaron has turned his gratitude into action. He has been completing a January challenge for the past 8 years now since his little boy Harry was born 10 weeks prematurely. Last year, his efforts raised an impressive €4000, which was used to purchase a specialized jaundice lamp for an incubator. This lamp provides essential treatment for newborns suffering from jaundice, a common condition where a baby's skin and eyes turn yellow. In 2024, the family were able to purchase 12 breast pumps for new mums. Breast pumps can be a lifeline for mothers, allowing them to provide breast milk even when direct breastfeeding isn't possible.
Aaron emphasizes that every euro raised goes directly to the SCBU. He sees it as a way to give back to the facility that provided such exceptional care to his son. He is quoted as saying that it is a way for him to give back in some small way for all the great work that the local facility does.
