Singapore's swimming scene is ablaze! The 2025 SEA Games saw Singapore's finest make a splash, securing a haul of medals and rewriting the record books. Let's dive into the details!
On Sunday, December 14th, the Singaporean swim team made waves, bringing home a total of four gold, two silver, and one bronze medal from the 33rd SEA Games.
Leading the charge was Letitia Sim, who dominated the breaststroke events. She not only defended her women's 200m breaststroke title, but also shattered the Games record with a stunning time of 2:27.37. And this is the part most people miss: She achieved a historic feat by claiming gold in all three breaststroke distances: the 50m, 100m, and 200m. Talk about a clean sweep! Unfortunately, Nicole Tay, at age 19, finished fifth with a time of 2:34.53.
In the women's 50m freestyle, Amanda Lim surged to victory, seizing the gold and setting a new Games record with a time of 25.03s. This win marked her return to the top after finishing second in the previous two Games. Quah Ting Wen, the former record holder, finished fourth with 25.42s.
But here's where it gets controversial... In the men's 50m butterfly, Teong Tzen Wei (23.24s) and Quah Zheng Wen (23.57s) took gold and silver, respectively. Teong reclaimed the gold he last won in 2022, after settling for silver in 2023.
The men's 200m breaststroke saw Chan Chun Ho secure the silver medal, his third of the Games, with a time of 2:14.82, while Maximillian Ang earned bronze with 2:15.56. The men's team of Ardi Azman, Jonathan Tan, Mikkel Lee, and Quah Zheng Wen also retained Singapore's 4x100m freestyle relay crown, clocking a new Games record of 3:16.65. In the women's 4x200m freestyle relay, the team of Gan Ching Hwee, Ashley Lim, Victoria Lim, and Quah Jing Wen finished fourth, but Gan's split time of 1:59.10 set a new national record.
