The usually unflappable CEO of Ryanair, Michael O'Leary, has publicly dismissed the audacious idea of Elon Musk acquiring the budget airline, turning what started as a discussion about in-flight Wi-Fi into a full-blown public feud.
This dramatic exchange, which has been building for days, kicked off when Ryanair initially decided against installing Elon Musk's Starlink satellite internet systems on their aircraft. O'Leary explained that the added drag from the Starlink antennas would significantly increase fuel consumption, a cost that simply wouldn't make sense for a budget carrier. He stated that the extra fuel costs would amount to a staggering $200 million annually, on top of the installation costs for two antennas per plane.
Musk, never one to shy away from a public retort, accused O'Leary of being "misinformed." O'Leary, in turn, didn't hold back, calling Musk an "idiot" on an Irish radio show. But here's where it gets controversial... Musk retaliated on his social media platform, X, labeling O'Leary an "utter idiot" and an "imbecile." He even playfully suggested buying Ryanair and putting someone named "Ryan" in charge, polling his followers on the idea, with a surprising 76.5% voting in favor of his acquisition.
O'Leary, however, brought a dose of reality to the situation, pointing out a crucial regulatory hurdle. As he explained to reporters in Dublin, non-European citizens are legally restricted from owning a majority stake in European airlines. Given that Musk is a South African-born US resident, this presents a significant obstacle. Yet, O'Leary also extended a hand, albeit with a jab, suggesting that if Musk were serious about investing, it would likely be a "significantly better investment than the financial returns he's earning on X" – a pointed reference to Musk's $44 billion acquisition of the platform (formerly Twitter).
And this is the part most people miss... O'Leary, a seasoned veteran known for his sharp wit, even thanked Musk for the "additional publicity," with Ryanair cleverly capitalizing on the spat by launching a seat sale featuring promotional material with a caricature of the billionaire. He humorously added that Musk would have to join a "very, very, very, very long queue" of people who have insulted him, including his own teenage children!
While Ryanair appreciates the Starlink system's functionality, O'Leary estimated that the cost of implementing it, coupled with the minimal passenger demand for such a service on short-haul flights (averaging about 1 hour and 15 minutes), makes it unfeasible. He projected that fewer than 5% of passengers would opt to pay a few extra euros for the service. Ryanair is, however, actively exploring partnerships with other providers, like Amazon's Kuiper, to offer onboard internet, but only if it leads to reduced costs for the airline.
O'Leary also didn't hold back his criticism of social media platforms, specifically X, calling it a "cesspit." He expressed his deep concern and offense regarding recent controversies surrounding Musk's AI chatbot, Grok, and its alleged use in generating non-consensual explicit images. He stated, "The most recent controversy with, you know, undressing children or undressing women is frankly offensive."
