A remarkable guide dog, Ridley, has been honored with a prestigious national award for his dedicated service throughout his life. The 11-year-old black Labrador-cross golden retriever, hailing from Dawlish, Devon, received the Hero Dog Award at the Guide Dogs People Awards for 2025. This recognition celebrates not only his role as a guide dog but also his ongoing contributions as an ambassador, therapy dog, and devoted companion to his owners, Peter and Marylou Boston. Mr. Boston expressed his admiration for Ridley's exceptional qualities, emphasizing his unwavering loyalty, service, and kindness, which make him a truly unique and cherished member of their family.
Ridley's journey began in the Midlands, where he was trained in Weston-Super-Mare, Somerset, and Exeter, Devon, before settling in North Devon for an eight-year period. After his retirement from guiding, he found a new purpose in the Boston household, joining Torbay and District Guide Dogs. Since then, Ridley has been an integral part of Mr. Boston's talks on guide dogs and has collaborated with Therapy Dogs Nationwide, as shared by Peter and Marylou on BBC Radio Devon. His versatility extends to various settings, including hospitals, hospices, schools, and universities, where he provides comfort and support.
One of Ridley's remarkable qualities is his ability to provide unwavering support during challenging health situations. Mr. Boston recounted a personal experience, mentioning a heart attack, quadruple bypass, and sepsis, during which Ridley remained by his side for 24 hours, demonstrating his unwavering loyalty and dedication. Additionally, Ridley has been trained in the Paws and Read program, enabling him to assist children in building confidence through reading.
The Boston family has also welcomed another retired guide dog, Clara, into their home, creating a dynamic duo with distinct personalities. Ridley, a people's dog, contrasts with Clara's calm and collected demeanor, showcasing the diverse roles and impacts of guide dogs in the lives of their owners.
