Islam Makhachev Turns Down UFC 324 Title Defense Offer: What's Next for the Champion? (2026)

Islam Makhachev has made it clear that he declined an offer to defend his UFC welterweight title at UFC 324, and the implications of this decision are significant for fans and analysts alike.

On December 27, 2025, it was reported that the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) had ambitions to launch a new chapter with their Paramount+ partnership by featuring Makhachev as the main event. However, the timeline they proposed was simply unmanageable for the champion.

Makhachev, boasting an impressive record of 28 wins and just one loss in mixed martial arts, alongside a 17-1 record in the UFC, captured the championship belt through a unanimous decision victory over Jack Della Maddalena at UFC 322 on November 15. The UFC approached him about defending his title within just nine weeks of that significant win, which he found to be inadequate time for proper preparation.

He revealed that the offer came in early December for a fight scheduled at UFC 324, taking place on January 24 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Makhachev explained how unrealistic this timeframe was for him. "I was offered a fight in January," he shared with Ushatayka. "I think January is an impossible date because I had already been in training for three months. They called me in December, stating I would be fighting in January. I told them it was too late for me to prepare properly; I needed to focus on my training and readiness for that date. I made it clear that I would not fight in January."

While the UFC did not specify who his opponent would be, Makhachev speculated that it might have been the unbeaten fighter Michael Morales. However, his co-manager, Ali Abdelaziz, hinted to MMA Junkie during UFC 323 fight week that potential opponents could include Kamaru Usman or Ian Machado Garry instead.

"They didn’t tell me the name, but honestly, I think it was Morales," Makhachev expressed. "That’s just my opinion. They never disclosed an opponent; they only asked if I was willing to fight in January."

Despite the January fight being off the table, Makhachev is eager to return to the octagon sooner rather than later. He forecasts a potential comeback in the second quarter of 2026, particularly after Ramadan, which falls between April and June. However, he acknowledged that delays could occur, especially if the UFC decides to book him for a high-profile event like the White House event.

"I believe it will happen sometime after Ramadan—perhaps in April, May, or June," he stated. "If they want to wait and schedule it for the White House, then I will wait. Otherwise, I am ready to fight earlier."

This situation raises questions about the balancing act fighters must perform between preparation and promotional timing. How do you feel about Makhachev's decision to turn down such a quick turnaround? Do you think it was wise for him to prioritize his training, or should champions always accept fights when offered?
