ST. GEORGE, Utah (KSTU) – In a heartwarming nod to holiday memories, a local St. George homebuilder has brought to life an exact copy of the famous McCallister residence from the beloved film 'Home Alone.' This isn't your average construction feat; it's a $7 million investment that captures the essence of the movie's iconic Chicago suburban home.

Nathan Shaffer, who partners at Strata Construction, explains that the team crafted this 14,000-square-foot Georgian-style mansion as their standout entry for February's St. George Parade of Homes. Sprawling across one acre in the Washington Fields neighborhood, the property boasts six bedrooms and 8.5 bathrooms, making it a spacious haven for any family – or film buff.

Shaffer admits with a chuckle that some might see this as an overly geeky endeavor, pouring millions into a house inspired by a movie that lit up their youth. 'I mean, it could be viewed as certainly nerdy for somebody to go and invest $7 million into a home that’s based on a movie that they happen to love when they were kids, right?' he mused. But for him, it's pure joy.

Outside, the resemblance is uncanny: Think of the exterior mimicking the original Illinois home, right down to an Oh-Kay Plumbing van parked nearby, adorned with a cheeky 'wanted wet bandit' sticker – a playful reference to the film's clumsy crooks. Shaffer believes this could very well be America's most adored fictional dwelling. 'I feel like the ‘Home Alone’ home is possibly America’s favorite home, in my opinion,' he shared.

This themed project isn't Strata Construction's first rodeo; their entry from last year's Parade of Homes drew inspiration from 'Beauty and the Beast.' Yet, this one holds a special place in Shaffer's heart, hitting closer to home.

Architect Josh Warner revealed that the team incorporated about 60 to 70% of the real Illinois house's floor plan for the interiors, since the movie's scenes inside were shot on a Hollywood soundstage. They struck gold when the original property hit the market, allowing them to pore over online listings like Zillow for pinpoint accuracy. 'Well, the challenge was just the research, right? So we spent time, we got lucky that Zillow was posting this house for sale at the time we were doing the design,' Warner noted, highlighting how thorough homework turned potential pitfalls into triumphs.

The replica doesn't skimp on movie-specific touches, such as the front-door mail slot and a dedicated attic space. But it ramps up the appeal with contemporary St. George perks, including an indoor pickleball court for those active days, a refreshing swimming pool, a relaxing steam shower, and even a sauna to unwind in true spa-like fashion. And this is the part most people miss: It features an authentic veranda with glass walls that slide open, creating a seamless indoor-outdoor flow that's both elegant and inviting.

'I’ve always wanted to do a veranda,' Warner said. 'I’d never done a Georgian home, so it allowed me to do a lot of study as to what makes up a Georgian-style home. So that for me was rewarding.' For beginners in architecture, think of a Georgian-style home as one inspired by 18th-century British designs, characterized by symmetrical facades, brick exteriors, and classical elements like columns – it's like stepping into a piece of history with a modern twist.

Interestingly, they've skipped one spooky element from the film: no basement with that menacing furnace that scared young Kevin McCallister half to death. Shaffer and his team at Strata Construction are planning community gatherings tied to the February parade, inviting folks to step into Kevin's shoes and scour the property for hidden movie easter eggs.

'We want them to just come and like be looking and using their creativity and their imagination to find the things from the movie,' Shaffer said, encouraging a fun, interactive experience that sparks nostalgia for all ages.

Already, they're drumming up excitement by cruising around town in the replica movie van and plastering 'wanted' posters for the Wet Bandits all over St. George – talk about immersive marketing!

The Parade of Homes usually attracts over 40,000 visitors during its run, and Shaffer knows this quirky project comes with its own set of pros and cons. 'Our buyer pool definitely shrinks way down for a product like this,' he acknowledged. 'And I think because of that, it’s so important for us to nail all the points and make sure it checks every box. If you’re going to spend $7 million, it better sing and dance for you.'

Dubbed 'McCallister Manor,' the residence is slated for completion by late January, perfectly timed for the February showcase.

But let's stir the pot a bit: Is this replica a tribute to cinematic genius or a frivolous waste of resources in a world with real housing shortages? Some might argue it's a delightful way to celebrate pop culture, while others could see it as prioritizing fantasy over practicality. What do you think – should more homes embrace theme park vibes, or is this just a one-off indulgence? Share your thoughts in the comments below; do you agree it's America's favorite fictional home, or does it miss the mark entirely? We'd love to hear your take!
