A Fiery Battle Rages in Deep Creek: Unpredictable Blaze Keeps Communities on Edge

The Deep Creek fire continues its relentless march, fueled by strengthening winds that have pushed the blaze eastward. Over 2,200 hectares have already been consumed, with firefighters battling to prevent its spread along Main South Road. Their tireless efforts have allowed the road to reopen for the local community, including Kangaroo Island residents, but this is a temporary victory. The situation remains volatile, and the road could close again at any moment.
And this is the part most people miss: This fire, like many scrub fires, is a cunning adversary. Wind-borne embers, tiny burning leaves and twigs, act as silent arsonists, igniting new fires within the fireground. While some of these spot fires burn themselves out in already scorched areas, others, as witnessed yesterday, can reignite the spread, making containment a constant challenge.
A formidable force of firefighters, heavy machinery, and aircraft are engaged in a desperate struggle against this inferno. However, the fire's relentless advance through difficult terrain continues. The SA Country Fire Service (CFS) continues its valiant fight against the fire raging between Deep Creek National Park and Cape Jervis on the Fleurieu Peninsula. Thanks to the heroic efforts of firefighters overnight, the blaze was halted approximately 1km from the township of Cape Jervis. Crews employed a multi-pronged strategy, including direct asset protection and the creation of control lines using heavy machinery and back burning south of Blowhole Road.
But here's where it gets controversial: Despite these efforts, the fire remains uncontrolled, having devoured over 1,600 hectares and continuing to burn on multiple fronts in steep, inaccessible terrain. Today's predicted wind changes add another layer of complexity, making the fire's behavior even more unpredictable. Residents in the area must remain vigilant, stay informed through the CFS website (cfs.sa.gov.au) or the Alert SA app, and be prepared to act swiftly.
A warning message remains in effect for this fire. Over 260 firefighters, supported by 40 trucks, 15 support vehicles, and 11 aircraft, including firebombers and observational planes, are engaged in a relentless battle. Their priorities include establishing control lines with heavy machinery and back burning, while aircraft provide aerial support with retardant drops.

Both Deep Creek National Park and Talisker Conservation Park are completely closed.
The smoke plume is visible across Kangaroo Island and the Yorke Peninsula. As a precautionary measure, residents with respiratory or cardiac conditions are advised to keep doors and windows closed and remain indoors.
A CFS staging area is operational at the Yankalilla Showgrounds, and Yankalilla Oval is being utilized for aviation operations. The public is requested to stay clear of these areas.
