D5705 Locomotive Restoration: Progress & How to Help (2026)

A Call to Action for Locomotive Enthusiasts!

The Class 15 Preservation Society has some exciting news to share about their efforts to restore the iconic Bury-based locomotive, D5705.

Let's dive into this update and explore how you can get involved in this remarkable journey.

The Co-Bo Appeal: A Step Towards Revival

Back in September 2025, the Society initiated the Co-Bo Appeal, aiming to raise funds for the initial restoration work on D5705. With a quote of £16,680+vat from GenElec, the appeal has made significant progress.

Fundraising Milestones

To date, the appeal has successfully raised £8,393, which is an incredible achievement and a testament to the support and passion of the community. This means we've surpassed the halfway mark, and we're well on our way to bringing D5705 back into service.

A Special Photo Charter: A Historic Event

Organized by Liam Barnes, with the assistance of Zac Hinchcliffe, a unique photo charter took place on February 6th. This charter was a special opportunity to showcase D5705 paired with an authentic Conflat wagon, box wagons, and a replica CONDOR headboard.

This historic event was the first of its kind, featuring D5705, and it played a crucial role in raising funds and awareness for the locomotive's restoration.

How Can You Contribute?

There are several ways you can support this noble cause:

  1. Merchandise and Monthly Badges: The Society offers a range of merchandise, including monthly releases of pin badges in 2026. The first badge sold out in under 12 hours, so make sure to check out their online shop (http://d8233.org.uk/shop.htm) to grab your piece of history.

  2. Donate to the Co-Bo Appeal: The appeal is still active, and we need your help to reach the target. You can donate directly by clicking here (https://www.facebook.com/donate/1773219470041882/1259663319540306/). Every contribution brings us one step closer to our goal.

And here's the controversial part...

Some might argue that the restoration of old locomotives is a waste of resources, but what do you think? Is preserving our railway heritage worth the effort and investment? Share your thoughts in the comments below, and let's spark a discussion!

Remember, your support makes a difference in keeping these iconic machines alive for future generations.
