Birmingham City's hopes of a home win against Stoke City were dashed, leaving fans disappointed.
In a thrilling encounter at St Andrew's @ Knighthead Park, the Blues were held to a draw by a resilient Stoke side. The match ended 1-1, with an own goal from Phil Neumann canceling out Tomoki Iwata's earlier strike.
The game started with Stoke on the front foot, almost taking the lead through Tomas Rigo. Birmingham's defense, however, held firm, with Neumann and James Beadle making crucial interventions.
Birmingham responded with a well-worked free-kick routine, as Tommy Doyle's delivery found the head of Jay Stansfield, who set up Iwata for a tap-in. But the referee disallowed the goal due to a foul in the build-up.
Iwata's persistence paid off as he scored a legitimate goal just before halftime, giving Birmingham the lead. The goal was a result of a well-rehearsed set-piece routine, with Doyle's corner finding Stansfield, who headed it back for Iwata to nod in.
The second half saw Birmingham's Ibrahim Osman burst down the left, creating a chance for Stansfield, but his effort was blocked. Stoke remained a threat from set-pieces, and they equalized in the 71st minute through Neumann's unfortunate own goal.
The game could have gone either way in the closing stages, with Stoke coming close from a right-wing corner. Birmingham's substitute, August Priske, had a late chance to win it, but his shot was saved.
